About your trip

Join me this February for a magical winter photography workshop in Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks—two of the Southwest’s most iconic landscapes made even more extraordinary under a blanket of snow. This is a rare opportunity to experience these parks during their quietest and most peaceful season, when the crowds vanish and the sandstone cliffs, hoodoos, and canyons are transformed by frost and winter light. From Zion’s sculpted red rock canyons to Bryce’s surreal amphitheater of spires, we’ll explore and photograph dramatic scenes shaped by snow, shadow, and low-angle sun. Whether you're capturing icy reflections in the Virgin River or first light breaking over a snow-covered Bryce rim, this workshop is designed to inspire and elevate your creative vision.

In addition to the sweeping vistas and dramatic canyon walls, we’ll spend time in Zion focusing on the quiet beauty of the small scene. Winter reveals a more intimate side of the park—delicate ice patterns along the river’s edge, crimson leaves frozen in place, snow-dusted boulders nestled among cottonwoods, and soft light illuminating sandstone textures. These fleeting moments offer endless opportunities for creative exploration and storytelling through the lens. We’ll slow down, observe, and photograph these subtle details that often go unnoticed, capturing the poetry of the season in both grand and intimate compositions.

One of the highlights of this winter workshop will be a guided hike into the Virgin River Narrows—an unforgettable experience in any season, but truly extraordinary in winter. With proper dry suits and gear, we'll safely explore and photograph this iconic slot canyon when it's at its most tranquil and surreal. Icicles hang from the sculpted walls, the water runs clear and cold beneath our feet, and soft winter light reflects off the canyon’s towering sandstone walls. Photographing the Narrows in these conditions offers a rare and rewarding opportunity to create truly unique images of one of Zion’s most celebrated landscapes.

Physical Requirements

This workshop involves moderate physical activity, including short hikes on rocky and uneven terrain, walking in snow or icy conditions, and wading through cold water during our guided Narrows hike. Participants should be in good health, comfortable carrying their camera gear on hikes of up to 2 miles, and prepared for winter weather. Proper footwear and layered clothing are essential for staying warm and safe in variable conditions.

Workshop Schedule – Zion & Bryce Winter

Day 1 – Arrival & Orientation (Bryce Canyon)
